Up-Skilling Translators and Project Managers in Africa
Ian Henderson to present on Up-skilling at AGIS '11 in Ethiopia
The biggest obstacle in getting a multi-language project completed quickly and cost-effectively in Africa? Not the Internet. Not even the lack of the translators. The biggest bottleneck is the limited resource of typesetting.
But by re-engineering the translation process and ‘up-skilling’ translators with new skills and tools to reduce the amount of typesetting needed, that obstacle disappears, greatly improving overall quality and reducing time-to-market.
Ian Henderson, Chief Executive Officer of Rubric, will explain how Rubric up-skilled translators and project managers in South Africa at the upcoming AGIS ’11 conference, 1 – 2 December (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).
Rubric, a provider of localization services to the technology and publishing industry for the past 15 years, works extensively with South African clients through its Rubric South Africa office. One of its largest clients is Oxford University Press, asked Rubric to help translate 360 books for South African students into 10 languages—11 million words—with a deadline of five months. Without changing the process and up-skilling the translators with translation tools and updated computer skills, the project could not have been completed. But not only did Rubric manage to complete the project, the quality was unmatched. The client, having expected for just over 50 percent government approval of its books, received an unprecedented 89 percent approval.
